Chapter Five: Preparation

"Zordon, what should I do with this? I grabbed it as a last minute thing, but now what?" Jamie asked, holding up Zed's staff.
"That staff is the source of his powers, what he uses to create his creatures. Without it, he is virtually powerless. I do not think he will give it up easily. Warn the other Rangers that Goldar and the putty patrol will most likely be attempting to retrieve it," Zordon told her.
"I will," she said, and transported out. She materialized in the youth center, where she found Jason beating up a practice bag. "I think it's dead," she said, laughing. He started, turned around, and saw her.
"Why'd you run off the other day? You knew Zedd would be waiting for you," he said, angry.
"I was being stifled. I needed some time to myself," she explained. "I'm supposed to tell you guys to be aware. I stole Zedd's staff, and he's gonna want it back. We're also supposed to be on the lookout for Goldar and the putties. There won't be any other monsters, because the staff generated them."
    "Where's the staff now?"
"At the command center, with Zordon. I'm going now, so you can continue pulverizing an innocent bag."
"Wait. I want to apologize for snapping at you earlier. I was just worried." He looked closer at her. "Where's your pendant?"
"Zedd destroyed it. I managed to save the ring Christina made, though. It may come in handy if the putties come around."
"Have you told the others yet?"
"No, I wanted to tell you first."
"We'd better let Tommy know. He just recharged a few days ago, but Christina may want to increase his powers a little more if a major battle is expected."
    "We'd better get going, then."

"I can't believe you stole his staff," Trini told Jamie. The group was in Billy's lab, waiting for Tommy's powers to be increased. "You just took it and left?"
"Yep. I wonder, is this Grand Theft - Staff?"
"I don't think you'll be convicted," Zack said, slapping her shoulder.
"Any jury would acquit you," Kimberly giggled. "Tommy, how are your powers?"
"Better. Christina, you are a godsend. I think it was fate you ran into Billy that day," Tommy told her.
"I like to think so," she replied, catching Billy's eye. He smiled at her and she smiled back.
"Christina, I'm really sorry about the pendant," Jamie apologized.
“Don't worry about it. When I use enough power, I'll make another one."
"Do you think it's possible to use Zedd's staff against him?" Jason wondered aloud. Everyone looked at him. "I was just thinking, and it came to me: he's been using that staff, trying to destroy us ever since he took over Rita's job. Maybe we could use his staff to get rid of him once and for all."
"Jason, he's powerless without that staff. It would be like killing a defenseless person," Jamie said.
"Are you feeling sorry for him?"
"He is my father, no matter how much I would like to deny it. For at least four years, he was a decent person. I have vague memories of him, and they're good memories. I don't want him to die humiliated. He deserves better. If you decide to use his staff to kill him, then I'll resign from being a Power Ranger. I don't want to be a part of a murder."
"Jamie, he would do it to us in a minute if he got the chance!" Jason protested.
"But we're not him. I'd like to think the Power Rangers have a bit more moral fiber than to kill a defenseless person."
"Jamie's right, Jason. If we destroyed Zedd now, we'd be no better than he is," Kimberly agreed.
"What, should we just give him back his staff?" Jason asked angrily.
"Not without a fight. If he comes after it, we'll be waiting for him, right, guys?" Zack asked.
    "Right!"
